| | Saturday, September 22, 2007, 8:00 PM, Paramount Theatre Peng Peng, Piano Scott Foppiano, Organ
| Bernstein | On the Town: Three Dance Episodes | | Grieg | Piano Concerto, Op. 16, A minor | | Saint-Saëns | Symphony No. 3, Op. 78, C minor, “Organ Symphony” |
The symphony kicks off the 2007-2008 season by hitting the town in style with an ode to the exuberance of youth. The concert begins with Three Dance Episodes from Bernstein’s On the Town, the Broadway smash that launched the careers of Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly. The orchestra then welcomes guest pianist Peng Peng, who at the tender age of 15 is dazzling audiences worldwide, to perform Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor. The program concludes with Symphony No. 3 in C minor by Saint-Saëns in what will be one of the most powerful and unforgettable evenings of the year.Beautiful playing – Peng Peng has the sound of an adult and amazing musical insight. Truly extraordinary! – Andrew Thomas, pre-college division chair, The Juilliard School Listen to Conductor Conversations with Nancy Hagen on Classical Radio KSUI 91.7 FM on Friday, Sept. 21 at 10 a.m. Buy Tickets NOW!

| | Saturday, October 20, 2007, 8:00 PM, Paramount Theatre Jeffrey Khaner, Flute
| Elgar | Crown of India Suite | | Chesky | Flute Concerto | | Rimsky-Korsakov | Scheherazade, Op. 35 |
Travel to the Far East with this exotic second Masterworks concert. The night begins with Elgar’s Crown of India Suite, a romantic, dramatic portrait of the subcontinent. Jeffrey Khaner, the renowned principal flute of the Philadelphia Orchestra, joins the orchestra to perform David Chesky’s Concerto for Flute and Orchestra – a work specially written for this concert’s guest artist. The piece has a sultry Middle Eastern flavor that’s sure to mesmerize. We end our musical travels in Baghdad with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, which musically brings to life the tales of 1001 Nights.[Chesky’s concerto] is fun, probably due in no small measure to Khaner’s ability to make it sound easy. Although the technical patterns are anything but that. – Flute Talk Magazine Listen to Conductor Conversations with Nancy Hagen on Classical Radio KSUI 91.7 FM on Friday, Oct. 19 at 10 a.m. Buy Tickets NOW!

| | Saturday, November 17, 2007, 8:00 PM, Paramount Theatre Julia Sakharova, Violin
| Humperdinck | Hänsel und Gretel: Three Excerpts | | Sibelius | Violin Concerto, Op. 47, D minor | | Strauss | Death and Transfiguration, Op. 24 |
It’s been 15 years since Julia Sakharova first came to Cedar Rapids and captured our hearts as a gifted violinist in need of an urgent medical procedure. She returns for a touching homecoming as a lovely and vibrant woman, now a graduate of The Juilliard School and an accomplished musician, to perform a shimmering performance of Sibelius’ Violin Concerto. Her performance is complemented by music from a classic Engelbert Humperdinck fairy-tale opera and Richard Strauss’ Death and Transfiguration – works infused with Romantic melody and sweeping orchestration. Her playing stands out as deeply felt and mature beyond her years. – Rachmaninov Society Newsletter Listen to Conductor Conversations on Classical Radio KSUI 91.7 FM on Friday, Nov. 16 at 10 a.m. Buy Tickets NOW!

| | Saturday, January 26, 2008, 8:00 PM, Paramount Theatre Gretchen Brumwell, Harp
| Brahms | Variations on a Theme of Joseph Haydn, Op. 56a | | Ginastera | Harp Concerto, Op. 25 | | Stravinsky | Le Baiser de la fée (The Fairy’s Kiss): Divertimento | | Hindemith | Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber |
What’s old is new again in this program, where each of the works is based on the melodic invention of a prior composer. Brahms discovered a melody he believed to be of Haydn’s invention and wrote his own set of variations based on the theme. The Cedar Rapids Symphony’s own Principal Harpist Gretchen Brumwell performs Alberto Ginastera’s Harp Concerto which represents his attempts to rework the indigenous music of Argentina through the “mysterious” voice of the harp. Stravinsky took the music of Tchaikovsky and remolded it into his own image with Le Baiser de la fée (The Fairy’s Kiss), while Hindemith’s progressive, sometimes jazzy Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber, borrows from the 19th century composer’s work and manipulates it in surprising ways. As one of the most exciting orchestral works of the 20th century, this is a fitting end to this concert of refashioned classics. The concert’s first half featured jewel solo performances by orchestra members including Gretchen Brumwell who was sprightly, courtly and lullabyish. Brumwell flourished. – Cedar Rapids Gazette Listen to Conductor Conversations on Classical Radio KSUI 91.7 FM on Friday, Jan. 25 at 10 a.m. Buy Tickets NOW!

| | Saturday, February 16, 2008, 8:00 PM, Paramount Theatre Daniel Kleinknecht, Guest Conductor
| Wagner | Siegfried Idyll | | Copland | Appalachian Spring | | Beethoven | Symphony No. 6, Op. 68, F Major (Pastorale) |
Catch a glimpse of paradise with “Idyllic Vistas” where composers express their passion and their musical view of paradise in different ways – some through nature and others through relationships. Wagner’s intimate Siegfried Idyll opens the concert with his candid ode to familial bliss. Appalachian Spring, Copland’s classic portrait of life, love and family in pastoral America, continues the concert and tells of a homesteading couple beginning their life together, giving thanks for their good fortune and nature’s bounty. The orchestra concludes the evening with Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony in which the composer expresses in his music the sounds of the countryside. Celebrate the beauty of the simple life as winter melts inexorably into spring.…with Kleinknecht at the podium, the sound was wonderfully hall-filling and alive with exceptional power and grace. – Peoria Journal Listen to Conductor Conversations on Classical Radio KSUI 91.7 FM on Friday, Feb. 15 at 10 a.m. Buy Tickets NOW!

| Haydn | Symphony No. 44, E minor (Trauer) | | Brahms | German Requiem, Op. 45 |
“How lovely is thy dwelling place.” This Psalm, echoed here by Brahms, illustrates the sentiment of this program which showcases the Cedar Rapids Concert Chorale in one of the great choral/orchestral works in the repertoire. Brahms’ German Requiem is an ecumenical work of hope and faith, which paints an image of the afterlife that is both uplifting and comforting. Complementing this work is Haydn’s stormy Symphony No. 44, popularly known as his “Trauer” or “mourning” symphony.Listen to Conductor Conversations on Classical Radio KSUI 91.7 FM on Friday, March 28 at 10 a.m. Buy Tickets NOW!

The season concludes with Prokofiev’s melodic and proudly Russian Symphony No. 5, one of the great musical achievements of the 20th century.Listen to Conductor Conversations on Classical Radio KSUI 91.7 FM on Friday, May 2 at 10 a.m. Buy Tickets NOW! * Please Note: Due to illness, previously schedule guest Pianist Maxence Pilchen will not be able to join the CRSO for the Masterworks VII concert.
