Rochelle Naylor, Symphony School & CRSO Education Director
Rochelle Naylor is a long-time member of the Cedar Rapids Symphony's viola section. For twelve years she was also the CRSO's Operations Director and Music Librarian. Prior to joining the CRSO staff, Rochelle worked as a music therapist and taught both general and instrumental music. Rochelle holds a Bachelor of Music degree in performance from the University of Iowa, and she completed her requirements in music therapy and elementary education while a graduate student at the U of I. She is a Registered Music Therapist, and certified with music specialization in elementary education (K-8).
Karen Liegl, Symphony School Coordinator
Karen Liegl holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rockford College, with 6-12 teacher certification. She has served as the Symphony School coordinator since 1999. She oversees all operational and logistical aspects of the Symphony School as well as scheduling and logistics of CRSO outreach activities. Karen writes and distributes the school newsletter, helps with teacher/student placement, processes registration and facilitates communication between Symphony School faculty and families and the CRSO staff.
Jessica Altfillisch, Violin/Viola
Jessica Altfillisch is a licensed educator who teaches both Suzuki and traditional violin and viola lessons. Jessica has 11 years of teaching experience with all age groups, including students with special needs. Locally she has worked in many public and private schools offering All-State coaching, chamber music rehearsals, beginner summer camps and music appreciation. Jessica earned her Bachelor of Music degree in viola performance from the University of Kansas. She is currently a master's student in music education at the University of Iowa, where she also completed the teacher education program. She has studied Suzuki pedagogy under Marilyn O'Boyle, William Preucil and Sonja Zeithamel.
Leah Anderson, Piano
An undergraduate piano performance major at the University of Iowa, Leah Anderson has studied with respected Russian pianist Lena Nichols and Rene Lecuona. Leah has been teaching at the Symphony School for five years, and playing the piano for more than twenty years. In addition to an active career in performance and teaching, Leah plans to attend graduate school in piano performance at the University of Iowa. Leah teaches both Suzuki and traditional lessons.
Susan Benya, Discovery Chorus Accompanist
Susan Benya serves as an adjunct instructor in music at Mount Mercy College, directs the third-eighth grade chorus at Trinity Lutheran School, and is organist and choir director at Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. Dr. Benya holds degrees in organ performance, music education, sacred music and choral conducting.
Carey Bostian, Cello
Carey Bostian has been conductor of the Iowa City Community String Orchestra since 1998. Born and raised in Granville, Ohio, he came to study at the University of Iowa in 1993. He holds a MFA in orchestral conducting as the last student of James Dixon, and a DMA in cello as a student of Charles Wendt. Carey is currently principal cellist of the Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra, and cellist with the CRSO String Quartet. In addition, he performs regularly with Red Cedar Chamber Music, and teaches cello at the Cedar Rapids Symphony School and privately in Iowa City. He is a member of the conducting faculty at the Preucil School of Music, and has served as conductor at Coe College and Lawrence University. Carey is an active clinician as both conductor and cellist and is on the Iowa Arts Council's Teaching and Performing Artists rosters. Since moving to Iowa, Carey has given dozens of performances, both as a conductor and cellist, of works by living composers and actively promotes several Iowa composers. Carey lives in Iowa City with his wife, Miera Kim, a violinist, and their two sons, Oliver and Adrian.
Gretchen Brumwell, Harp
Gretchen Brumwell is principal harpist of the CRSO and teaches harp and harp ensemble for the Symphony School. She is the harp instructor at the University of Northern Iowa and the director of the Northern Iowa Summer Harp Workshop at UNI. Gretchen received her Master of Music degree from Rice University.
Courtney Cameron, Violin/String Outreach Programs
Courtney Cameron holds a master’s degree in violin performance from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and received her bachelor’s degree from Lawrence University in Wisconsin. She has previously been a member of the Green Bay Symphony Orchestra and the chamber group Sinfonia da Camera. She is currently a member of the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra and is principal second violin of the Dubuque Symphony. She teaches traditional violin lessons as well as Symphony School String Outreach Programs.
William S. Carson, Coe College Honor Band
William S. Carson is director of bands at Coe College, where he also teaches clarinet, conducting and music history. Dr. Carson has served as an award winning music teacher for schools in Illinois, Indiana, New Hampshire, Arizona and Iowa. Dr. Carson has extensive experience as a guest conductor, including performances with the United States Army Field Band, the Marine Band of Camp LeJeune and the CBDNA Regional All-Star Band. Dr. Carson's travels as a conductor, clinician and performer have taken him to 37 states and 14 foreign countries.
Brenda Cerwick
Brenda Cerwick working toward a bachelor’s degree in music education has studied violin pedagogy under Beth Hoffman at Coe College and Kirkwood Community College. She has over five years of experience teaching students from preschool through adult in traditional and Suzuki lessons in public school, group and private settings.
Abbie Cooper, Odyssey Chorus Accompanist
Abbie Cooper completed her bachelor's degree in music education with emphasis in piano and voice at Wartburg College where she studied piano with Dr. Ted Reuter, and her master's in piano performance at Azusa Pacific University as a student of Dr. Robert Sage. In July 2008 Abbie was to tour and perform in Bulgaria with the International Chamber Music Festival. Abbie is a doctoral student in piano pedagogy and performance at the University of Iowa and teaches piano lessons at her home.
Alla Cross, Violin/Viola
Alla Cross was raised in Russia. A violinist since the age of six, she received her bachelor's and master's degrees at a music conservatory in Novosibirsk, Russia. As principal of the Violin II section of the Krasnoyarsk Symphony she toured in Russia, Germany, Switzerland and Yugoslavia. She worked as a professional musician for several years before moving to the United States in 1999. Currently Alla is in her final year of study for a doctoral degree at the University of Iowa. Alla has led the University of Iowa Symphony and chamber orchestras and has been a member of the CRSO since 1999.
Chrystal Faltis, String Outreach Programs
Chrystal Faltis earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Augustana College, Rock Island, and an elementary education endorsement from the University of Iowa, with additional postgraduate study at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Chrystal has taught strings in many Cedar Rapids schools and at Coe College. In addition she has judged music contests in Cedar Rapids, Davenport and Waterloo. She plays viola regularly with the Coe College Orchestra, the Iowa City Community String Orchestra and at the Five Seasons Chamber Music Festival.
John Hall, Bass/Bass Ensemble
John Hall is orchestra director at Kennedy High School in Cedar Rapids and has taught as an adjunct instructor and clinician at Cornell College, the University of Northern Iowa and Augustana College. He holds a Master of Music degree in bass performance from the University of Georgia and is completing a doctor of musical arts degree at the University of Memphis. He is currently a bassist in the CRSO.
Mike Hall, Violin/Viola/String Outreach Programs
Mike Hall holds a Master of Music degree in Suzuki pedagogy from the Cleveland Institute of Music and has done advanced Suzuki training with Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, Doris Preucil, Alice Joy Lewis and Barbara Barber. He is a veteran performer with the CRSO, having played with the orchestra since 1992. Mike teaches Suzuki and traditional violin and viola lessons and is also a teacher in Symphony School String Outreach Programs.
Amy Hanisch, Discovery Chorus Director
Amy Hanisch received her Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Iowa. For the past twenty years, she has served as a music specialist in the Cedar Rapids Community School District. She is in her tenth year as director of the Discovery Chorus. Amy has directed many honor choirs for the Iowa Choral Directors Association, as well as all-city choral festivals for the Dubuque, Cedar Falls and Des Moines school districts and the 1997 Opus Fifth-Sixth Grade Select Honor Choir. Amy was a director for the Kirkwood College Young People’s Performing Arts Camp for many years and has taught vocal technique, chorus, movement and composition classes at Theatre Cedar Rapids.
Bryan Hardester, Trombone / Low Brass
Bryan joined the CRSO in 2001 as bass trombonist. Bryan is also a member of the symphony’s brass quintet as both bass trombonist and tubist. He received degrees from Southeast Missouri State University and the University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music in trombone, euphonium, jazz improvisation and composition. He is in the final stages of completing his D.M.A. at the University of Iowa. Outside of the CRSO, Bryan also performs with the Quad Cities Symphony and teaches low brass at Coe College.
Charles "Andy" Harris, Horn
Andy Harris has been a member of the CRSO since 1995, serving as principal horn since 1998. He performs with the CRSO brass and woodwind quintets and teaches horn at Kirkwood, Coe and Wartburg Colleges as well as at the Symphony School. He has also lived in Monterrey, Mexico, where he worked for the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon (UANL) as Solo/Principal Horn in the symphony, and as horn instructor. Andy received his Bachelor of Music at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and his master’s from Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama.
Peter Hart, Saxophone
Peter Hart holds a Master of Music degree in saxophone performance from Eastman School of Music, Rochester, N.Y. Peter played for three years on the S/S Norway luxury cruise ship in the Caribbean. He has played professionally with Ray Charles, The Temptations, The Supremes, 5th Dimension, Clark Terry, Louis Belson, T.S. Monk, Carla Bley, Diane Carroll, Vic Damone, Natalie Cole, Buddy DeFranco and many touring Broadway shows. Peter is the shop foreman repairing band instruments for West Music in Marion.
Takuya Horiuchi, Violin
Taki, as he is more commonly known to his students, received his Bachelor of Music degree from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, and his Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School of Music. He has been concertmaster of the CRSO since 1997 and is first violin in the CRSO String Quartet. He teaches private traditional violin lessons.
Cheryl Krewer, String Outreach Programs Lead Teacher
Cheryl Krewer has a master's degree in bass from the University of Iowa and Suzuki training in violin and cello from both the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and the Preucil School in Iowa City. Her teaching experience includes public school strings, college (14 years), private and the Symphony School since 1986. She has performed with the CRSO since 1985. Currently she is the lead teacher for Symphony School String Outreach Programs.
Beth Luther, Piano/Voice
Beth Luther holds a bachelor’s degree in music education from Michigan State University. She has been playing piano for 24 years as an experienced soloist, accompanist, and teacher. Beth worked as the choral director and piano teacher for both Peotone High School and Addison Trail High School in the Chicago area, as well as having taught private piano, violin, and voice lessons. She sang with the professional Chamber Singers of Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago, as well as serving as organist, pianist, and choral director at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lansing, Michigan. She currently teaches voices lessons and provides Suzuki and traditional piano instruction for the Symphony School.
Kelly Moritz, Violin/Viola/String Outreach Programs
Kelly Moritz received her Bachelor of Arts degree in music education from the University of Northern Iowa. She has studied Suzuki pedagogy with Doris Preucil, Kimberly Meier-Sims and Sonja Zeithamel. She has been a Suzuki parent accompanying her sons to several Suzuki institutes at Stevens Point, Wisconsin. Aside from teaching privately with the Symphony School, Kelly teaches Fifth Grade Fiddles at Johnson Elementary School of the Arts and is the orchestra teacher at Taft Middle School. She was awarded the Bruce Eilers Award for the Iowa Classroom String Teacher of the Year at the Iowa String Teachers Association convention in May 2006.
Alan Naylor, Trumpet
Alan Naylor is the trumpet instructor at Coe College. He earned a master’s degree in music education with an emphasis on trumpet from the University of Northern Iowa. Al has 29 years of experience as an instrumental music teacher in Eastern Iowa. He has performed professionally in a wide variety of settings including the CRSO, and he was principal trumpet for the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band for 10 years. Al serves as an adjudicator for the Iowa High School Music Association, where he judges All-State auditions, solo/ensemble festivals, jazz bands, and concert bands.
Barbara Owen, Cello
Barbara Owen earned dual degrees in cello performance and music education from Oberlin College. She is a long time member of the CRSO cello section and has been a Suzuki trained cello instructor for the Symphony School for more than 15 years. Barb is currently accepting traditional cello students of all ages.
Bärbel Pafford, Violin/Cello/String Outreach Programs
Bärbel Pafford holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in music education from the University of South Carolina. Throughout college, she taught in the USC String Project, an after-school string program for third through twelfth graders. She taught public school orchestra in Spartanburg, S.C., before moving to Cedar Rapids. Bärbel has performed with many orchestras along with the Palmetto String Trio in South Carolina and is looking forward to joining the playing community in Cedar Rapids with the Cedar River String Trio. With the Symphony School, she teaches traditional violin and cello lessons and in String Outreach Programs.
Lisa Ponton, Suzuki Coordinator
Lisa Ponton received her Bachelor of Music degree from The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. As a full scholarship recipient, she earned her Master of Music degree at The Juilliard School in New York. She then concluded her studies by completing the Konzertexam at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne. She has training in Suzuki pedagogy from Ronda Cole and Edward Kreitman.
Ms. Ponton has held the positions of Associate Principal Viola of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and Principal Viola of Sweden's Malmö Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Ponton recently joined the Cedar Rapids Symphony/Orchestra Iowa as Principal Viola and is a member of the Cedar Rapids Symphony String Quartet.
Sam Stapleton, Violin
Sam Stapleton began playing the violin at the age of five, studying at the Preucil School of Music in Iowa City before earning a Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Sam is currently working towards a master's degree in orchestral conducting at the University of Iowa. He teaches traditional and Suzuki lessons.
Jennifer Sterner, Viola/Violin
Jenny Sterner graduated from Coe College, studying viola with Michael Kimber. She has been a student of the Suzuki method for years and has participated in Suzuki institutes for viola and violin at Stevens Point, Wisconsin. Jenny has completed Suzuki teacher training in Books 1 and 2 with Martha Shackford and Book 3 at Stevens Point. Jenny teaches traditional and Suzuki lessons.
Teri Stuckey, Music Together®
Teri Stuckey graduated from Mount Mercy College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education specializing in early childhood. She has taught first grade and pre-kindergarten classes, where she was able to incorporate music activities into the curriculum. Teri completed the training to become a registered Music Together® teacher in the summer of 2004.
Jennifer Wagaman, Flute
Jennifer Wagaman received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Luther College in flute performance and music management. In December 2006, she received her Master of Music degree in flute performance from the University of Northern Iowa. At Luther and UNI she was been a member of the symphony orchestra, wind ensemble, chamber ensembles and flute choir. In addition to teaching at the Symphony School, Jennifer is a flute instructor at the UNI Suzuki School in Cedar Falls and the Preucil School of Music in Iowa City. She has taught flute and piano lessons for over five years to a range of ages.
Pamela Weest-Carrasco, Harp
Pam Weest-Carrasco plays second harp for the Cedar Rapids and Quad City Symphonies as well as principal for the Southeast Iowa Symphony and University of Iowa Ensembles. Before moving to Iowa City in 1990, she free-lanced in the Washington, D.C. area, playing with the Arlington Symphony and at Ford's Theatre. Her free-lancing has included concerts with Julio Iglesias, Lainie Kazan, Jack Jones, Toni Tenille, the Moody Blues and Josh Groban. She received her music degrees from Indiana University and Suzuki teacher training at the Texas Christian University Suzuki Institutes with Mary Kay Waddington.
Melinda Westphalen, Piano
Melinda Westphalen is an active piano teacher and accompanist. Currently an applied music associate at Grinnell College, Dr. Westphalen has previously taught in Iowa City and at the Conservatory of Piano in Worthington, Ohio. She received both her doctorate and master’s degrees in piano performance from the University of Iowa, where she studied with Rene Lecuona.
Keri Worden, Odyssey Chorus Director
Keri Worden received her Bachelor of Music degree from Coe College. She taught general and vocal music for four years before becoming a professional accompanist. She plays piano for Roosevelt Middle School's show choir and many local musicals, contests and recitals. She has served as accompanist for the Odyssey Chorus for four seasons. This is her second season as director of this ensemble.
